Most of us hear the words Root Canal and run screaming for the nearest exit. Some of us may immediately think of the poor victims waking up from anesthesia by family and splashed all over YouTube. However, with advancements in modern dentistry and the use of local anesthetics, these critical procedures can be tolerated as well as getting a standard filling. Making sure you pick the right person to drive you home is up to you.
DAY OF THE PROCEDURE
Root canals are used to save and treat teeth with severely infected roots by removing the infected nerve and the pulp of the tooth. The area is then cleaned and properly prepared for a crown that will protect and prevent the tooth from complete removal. There may also be a need for an antibiotic to be administered to prevent further infection within the tooth. The restored tooth will provide a natural appearance and support normal tooth function. After your procedure, it is entirely normal to experience some sensitivity due to teeth inflammation for the first several days. Regular brushing and flossing habits can be resumed immediately following treatment and restoration is complete.
DO I NEED A ROOT CANAL?
Signs that you may need to consult with your dentist about a possible root canal would be:
- Recurring trouble with a tooth
- Severe pain when you chew or apply force to the tooth
- Tooth sensitivity to hot and cold
- Swelling, tenderness or a bump on the gums near affected tooth
If you have one or all of the above symptoms, it is important to contact our office today. They can evaluate and offer the best course of action to save your tooth.
